Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH) recently held its sixth annual research symposium, highlighting the research of the University’s students, faculty and alumni. This year’s symposium included presentations and posters from a range of integrative health disciplines, featured award recipients, and was held virtually through both live and asynchronous activities.
Keynote speaker Ian Coulter presented his research, “Whole Systems Research of the Complementary and Integrative Health encounter: Deconstructing the placebo.” Dr. Coulter is a senior health policy analyst at the RAND Corporation where he also holds the Samueli Institute chair in policy for integrative medicine.
Katherine Smith, professor of health promotion and health and wellness coaching at MUIH, was named as the recipient of MUIH’s annual Faculty Excellence in Research and Scholarship Award. This award recognizes a faculty member who is actively supporting MUIH’s commitment to enhancing the fields of integrative health through scholarship and research. Smith presented her research, “Effects of an Individualized Worksite Wellness Program at a Small Integrative Health University.”
Thirty-four research posters from MUIH students, faculty, and alumni were presented in an asynchronous forum with more than 350 attendees. Doctor of Clinical Nutrition student Lorraine Hamilton received the Student Research Poster Award for her work, “Effects of a Low Glycemic, High Fat Diet on Female Fertility in Premenopausal Women: A Narrative Review.” The interdisciplinary faculty team of Daryl Nault, Marybeth Missenda, Atiera Abatemarco, Christine Cherpak-Castagna and Steffany Moonaz received the Faculty Research Poster Award for their work, “Study Design to Validate an Evidence-Based Medicine Skills Assessment for Integrative Health.”
“Last year we had to quickly pivot online from a planned in-person symposium,” said Dr. Steffany Moonaz, chair of Integrative Health Research. “This year, we were able to plan a much more robust and interactive event that was widely accessible to a broader geographical audience. We are thrilled at the level of engagement it received.”
