NUNM Names Dr. Joshua Goldenberg Associate Director of the Helfgott Research Institute

by Shari Barbanel | September 4, 2024

2408-Goldenberg nunmDr. Joshua Goldenberg has been named the new associate director of the Helfgott Research Institute at the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM, Portland, OR).

“Taking on this leadership position is a unique opportunity for which I am extremely grateful,” said Dr. Goldenberg, who earned his Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from Bastyr University in 2013. “It will allow me to help support and promote the excellent work being done at Helfgott and help take NUNM to the next level as the standard-bearers of high-quality, evidence-informed complementary and integrative health research.”

Dr. Goldenberg will be working alongside Dr. Heather Zwickey, who was recently named vice president of research and academic excellence.

“Joshua brings a wealth of knowledge, vision and enthusiasm to the Helfgott Research Institute,” said Dr. Zwickey. “He’s working to build our community of integrative medicine investigators, and he’s committed to fostering an environment where everyone’s voice is heard and everyone’s strengths are valued.”

Now at NUNM, Dr. Goldenberg said that he spent the month of August by going on a “listening tour” to meet with all levels of stakeholders within and outside of the institution.

“Ultimately, I am here to serve the NUNM community,” Dr. Goldenberg said, adding that he hopes to better understand what the community finds important and wants to see accomplished.

Passionate about evaluating and utilizing evidence, Dr. Goldenberg is an NIH (National Institutes of Health)-funded researcher with numerous publications in scientific journals such as JAMA and the BMJ.

Having joined Helfott as a researcher in 2019, he teaches critical evaluation of medical literature and advanced evidence synthesis.

At Helfgott, Goldenberg steps into the former role of Dr. Ryan Bradley.

“Ryan was an outstanding director,” Dr. Goldenberg said. “He is also a colleague and a friend. I, as well as the entire complementary and integrative health community, owe him a huge debt of gratitude for what he has accomplished at Helfgott. I hope to continue to carry that torch.”

On the clinical side, Dr. Goldenberg focuses on integrative approaches to gastroenterology conditions with a special focus on small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. He sees patients virtually at the Goldenberg GI Center.

Having earned his bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006, Dr. Goldenberg is currently a PhD candidate at Maastricht University, studying forensic epidemiology under Dr. Michael Freeman, founder of the field.
