The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) named Bastyr University Chancellor Dr. Joe Pizzorno the 2026 Physician of the Year, recognizing decades of leadership that continue to share evidence-established naturopathic medicine. Dr. Pizzorno, known throughout the Bastyr University community as Dr. Joe, was honored at the AANP’s annual convention in Madison, WI.
“Dr. Joe has long been one of the most influential leaders in science-based natural medicine,” said AANP Executive Board Member Dr. Luke Huber while presenting the award. “His work has shaped generations of naturopathic physicians, educators, researchers, and advocates.”
Dr. Pizzorno is the only physician to receive the AANP Physician of the Year Award twice. He is a past recipient of the Louisa and Benedict Lust Award for lifetime professional achievement in naturopathic medicine.
“Dr. Joe, your vision has drawn countless people to the profession of naturopathic medicine and you continually challenge Bastyr University to uphold the highest standards,” said Dr. Huber in his award presentation speech. “This recognition is especially significant because this is not Dr. Joe’s first time receiving AANP’s Physician of the Year Award. It is his second; reflecting both the lasting importance of his earlier contributions and the remarkable leadership he has provided over the decades. That leadership continues as Dr. Joe moves into the role of Chancellor at Bastyr University, where his vision, experience, and ability to inspire others remain invaluable to the university and its future.”
Countless physicians cite Dr. Pizzorno as their inspiration for entering the field of naturopathic medicine. Even more people have been moved to adopt healthier lifestyles through Dr. Pizzorno’s books and publications.

In July 2026, Dr. Pizzorno became Bastyr University’s first chancellor. In his new role, he oversees the expansion of healing programs designed to transform the wellbeing of the human community.
