The Practitioner’s Guide to Longevity

by Eric Munson | March 1, 2025

A holistic approach for healthy aging and longer life.

According to Future Market Insights, the global healthy aging supplement market size is expected to grow from $1.406 million in 2024 to $2.161 million in 2034 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.9 percent.

This growth is propelled by a combination of the growing aging population and an escalating interest in preventative health care. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates one in six people will be age 60 or older by 2030.

“As the population in the United States is aging, many would like to remain healthy for the longest time and ideally reach the end of their lives without major disability. The term ‘health span’ is often used to define this aspiration,” said Céline Torres-Moon, senior scientist at Illinois-based Protocol for Life Balance.

Dr. Stacey Smith, marketing and communications manager, NORAM at France-based Gnosis by Lesaffre, agreed with Torres-Moon about the importance of “health span.”

“There is an exciting trend—today’s older generations (Millennials and Gen X) are aging with a vengeance! Meaning, people know they are growing older and are employing healthy lifestyle habits to extend their life in their years to defy Father Time,” Dr. Smith said.

Healthy aging also encompasses a large set of conditions—all organs, cells, biochemicals and systems age, slow down and welcome opportunistic disease risk, according to Dr. Smith.

“This sets the foundation for an emerging trend of healthy aging-specific: the umbrella language of ‘healthy aging’ is too vague and consumers are seeking systemic preservation, knowing that doing so will extend their health and well-being as the years pass,” Dr. Smith said.

Mimi Hernandez, MS, RH(AHG), clinical educator, herbal medicine at Wisconsin-based Standard Process, agreed with Torres-Moon and Dr. Smith about the importance of health span, adding there is a growing understanding of the biological processes that govern aging.

She added another emerging trend is “inflammaging,” or how low-grade inflammation accumulates over time and contributes to age-related diseases.

“These inflammatory processes are increasingly recognized as contributors to a range of age-related diseases, including cardiovascular issues, neurodegenerative disorders, metabolic syndromes and musculoskeletal problems,” Hernandez said. “As awareness of inflammaging grows, it is influencing both consumer behavior and scientific research, highlighting the need to address inflammation proactively in aging populations.”

Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, a medical doctor and author based in Hawaii, said two important trends are dementia prevention and pain relief. “These two are related, as chronic pain, present in almost one-third of those over 65, dramatically increases dementia risk,” he said. “Having at least five areas of pain, is associated with the brain showing signs of being eight years older than its chronological age. Research suggests that the chronic pain triggers microglial activation, triggering dementia. Both the pain and dementia are preventable–naturally!”

Dr. Alexander Zubkov, board-certified neurologist, integrative medicine specialist and Medical Advisory Board member at 1MD Nutrition (Los Angeles, CA) said the latest trends focus on cellular health, metabolic optimization and inflammation control.

“Consumers are increasingly looking at peptide therapy for cellular repair and mitochondrial function; senolytics to clear out aging, damaged cells and promote longevity; gut health and the microbiome as a key factor in brain and immune function; precision nutrition; supplementation, using lab testing to tailor diets and supplement regimens; and lifestyle biohacking, such as intermittent fasting, red light therapy and deep sleep optimization,” Dr. Zubkov said.

Kylen Ribiero and Michelle Zofrea, CEO and COO of Florida-based Lightbody Labs, added eye health usually doesn’t come to mind when talking about healthy aging. However, chronic eye and vision issues are starting to affect younger groups, which may be due to effects of digital screen consumption.

“With increased screen time, more people are using blue light-blocking glasses and screen filters to reduce strain and protect vision,” they said. “AI-powered eye exams are improving early detection of conditions like macular degeneration, while red and near-infrared light therapy is being explored for its potential to slow vision decline.”

Consumers are increasingly adopting proactive measures that integrate advances in nutrition, new health technologies and personalized solutions to support long-term health, according to Abdul Alkayali, vice president sales and marketing at Longevity by Nature (Temecula, CA).

“Key longevity priorities include maintaining cellular health, improving cognitive performance and optimizing immune function. To achieve these goals, consumers are focusing on science-based natural ingredients, such as polyphenols, collagen and antioxidants,” Alkayali said. “In addition, the concept of ‘biohacking’ has gained traction, as evidenced by the growing interest in leveraging technology, such as wearable devices, to monitor health markers and access real-time data for personalized wellness strategies.”

Gloria Kolb, co-founder and CEO of Elidah, doing business as Elitone (Newtown, CT), agreed with Alkayali about wearable devices and personalized health solutions.

“The latest trends focus on maintaining an active and fulfilling lifestyle by addressing barriers to mobility, comfort and confidence. People are increasingly seeking personalized solutions that promote health and vitality,” Kolb said. “Technology-driven innovations, such as wearable devices, are becoming more popular, especially when they are non-invasive and easy to use.”

Dr. Nick Bitz, chief science officer at California-based ProHealth Longevity, added affordability and accessibility are two major reasons why longevity products are becoming popular. He also observed other trends including novel ingredients, product stacks, compounded pharmaceuticals and at-home testing.

Consumers and Patients

Consumers and patients are looking for products that will increase their health span. Many of these products provide macronutrients needed to maintain healthy muscle mass, normal joint function, youthful skin and brain function, according to Torres-Moon.

“They are also seeking products that will provide targeted micronutrients that work at the cellular level to support cardiovascular, cognitive and metabolic health, as well as normal cell division, as these are susceptible to increase alterations as the body ages,” Torres-Moon said.

Dr. Zubkov added consumers are moving beyond general wellness and seeking targeted, holistic, long-term, science-backed solution for energy levels, cognitive health, joint health, mobility, heart health, digestion, metabolic efficiency, inflammation, oxidative stress and cellular aging.

According to Hernandez, the maturing demographic tends to be highly informed and holistic-minded, often seeking out products that align with their personal health journeys. Today’s consumers are more proactive about their health and frequently collaborate with health care practitioners and trusted brands to find the most effective supplements.

“The trend toward healthy aging and longevity increasingly aligns with consumer values that emphasize connection to nature, sustainability, and holistic well-being,” Hernandez said. “As individuals age, their mindsets often shift toward embracing a pattern of wholeness, reflecting a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of health, lifestyle and the environment.”

Consumers are seeking out solutions that can be incorporated into their daily lives without disrupting their routines, according to Kolb.

“They want products that offer convenience, control and effectiveness. There’s also a growing demand for home-based options that empower individuals to manage their health proactively, without relying solely on in-person clinical visits,” Kolb said.

Dr. Smith said healthy aging appears to be a broad, amorphous category, but it is exactly what consumers and patients are looking for. However, distilling everything down is based on the individual’s physical and physiological needs, and family history. They are frequently turning to dietary supplements and are seeking specific healthy-aging products.

“Consumers prioritize being proactive by seeking preventative solutions for energy, mobility and cognitive function. They seek convenient solutions in easy-to-take and good-tasting formats such as powders, functional foods and other delivery methods,” Dr. Smith said.

According to Maria Stanieich, senior marketing manager at Kyowa Hakko USA (New York, NY), consumers are looking at antioxidants as an avenue to help with the effects of oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is associated with the development of numerous diseases, immune disorders and aging.

“Chronic degenerative diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, cataracts and cancer are linked to oxidative stress caused by free radicals,” Stanieich said. “Mechanisms to get rid of free radicals are in nearly every cell in the body and are especially concentrated in the liver. Enzymes that use the powerful antioxidant glutathione to reduce the effects of oxidative stress are a major component of these cellular defense mechanisms.”

Ribiero and Zofrea emphasized eye health is becoming more prevalent across all demographics even those who are young or have no family history of eye health issues. As a result, younger people are being more proactive about their eyes including blue light filters, screen filters and supplements with lutein, zeaxanthin and other antioxidants.

Alkayali said consumers are seeking naturally, scientifically validated solutions that promote overall health and longevity. Peer-reviewed studies showing efficacy and safety remain the “gold standard” for trust and confidence in dietary supplements.

“Sustainability, ethical sourcing and transparency in manufacturing are increasingly important, especially with individuals seeking clean-label products that align with their environmental values,” Alkayali said. “Consumers also want multifunctional ingredients, such as collagens supporting both healthy joints and skin, for comprehensive wellness benefits. Convenient product formats like capsules, gummies or powders are popular for easy consumption and integration into daily routines.”

Dr. Bitz agreed with Alkayali that people want scientifically backed products, adding trusted voices and tangible results are also important.

“Recommendations matter! Many consumers look to influencers and online forums like Reddit to discover new products and hear what others are saying before making decisions,” Dr. Bitz said. “At the end of the day, it’s all about results. Whether it’s sharper thinking, glowing skin or a boost in energy, noticeable benefits keep people coming back.”

Diet and Lifestyle

There are various lifestyle modifications that can help maintain and optimize vitality such as diet, exercise, sleep and stress management.

“I would focus more on lifestyle. Staying active, maintaining social connections and addressing health challenges early are key factors in maintaining vitality,” Kolb said. “Engaging in regular physical activities, managing stress effectively, and exploring non-invasive health solutions can help individuals lead healthier and more confident lives.”

Dr. Zubkov recommended eating an anti-inflammatory rich diet, intermittent fasting and time-restricted eating, adequate protein intake, quality sleep and gut-brain connection support.

Dr. Teitelbaum recommended decreasing sugar intake, walking in the sunshine and getting sufficient sleep to decrease pain and dementia risk. Stanieich and Alkayali recommended eating more fruits and vegetables, and exercise.

“A balanced diet rich in proteins, low in added sugar, and full of fruits and vegetables with limited ultra-processed foods is ideal. Maintaining a healthy weight is important to help limit the effect of weight on lower limb joints,” Torres-Moon said. “Maintaining an exercise regimen adapted to one’s ability and mobility is very important to maintain bone, muscles and brain health. Finally, maintaining strong social connections and stimulating one’s intellect is essential for the support of cognitive function.”

Dr. Bitz added, “There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution; it’s highly individualized. My approach is rooted in ayurveda, which stresses the importance of customizing your diet and lifestyle to align with your ‘body type.’ Understanding your body’s energetics is without a doubt the most powerful tool, as it offers clear guidance on which foods and practices to embrace or avoid, identifies which body systems need support, and even predicts potential health risks with precision.”

Hernandez added, “Embracing a truly holistic approach means intertwining a vibrant diet with an active, connected lifestyle while mindfully managing stress. This comprehensive strategy promotes nourishment through nutrient-dense foods, regular physical activity and meaningful social connections. By tuning into our stress levels and incorporating relaxation techniques, we build a balanced foundation for health. Through these mindful choices, we can cultivate a life filled with energy, strength and joy at any age.”

Trending Products and Ingredients

As a fast-growing health category, there are various products and ingredients that have been gaining popularity.

Dr. Bitz observed numerous popular ingredients such as magnesium, NAD+ boosters, methylene blue, oral peptides and compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide. Dr. Zubkov also observed NAD+ precursors, adding collagen, curcumin, polyphenols, biotics, adaptogens, CoQ10 and PQQ are also gaining traction.

According to Torres-Moon, HMB, protein powders and creatine are traditionally associated with sports and increase muscle mass in young adults.* However, aging adults now recognize they may not receive enough protein through their diet and can supplement it using amino acids and protein supplements.*

According to Kolb, wearable health devices and non-invasive treatments are gaining traction in the healthy aging and longevity space. Products that blend technology and ease of use are highly sought after.

“Consumers are also leaning toward solutions that allow them to take charge of their health, including fitness trackers, sleep monitors and devices that address specific health challenges,” Kolb said.

What Companies Offer

With a variety of ingredients, science and research, there is a plethora of products available for practitioners and consumers.

Dr. Teitelbaum recommended several products from EuroMedica including Curaphen, Essential Multivitamin and PEA with GammaSorb. All these products contain ingredients that can help decrease risk of dementia.

“If chronic pain or early dementia are present, add a high absorption PEA with GammaSorb 1,200 mg a day for one month and then if needed increase to 2,400 mg a day,” Dr. Teitelbaum said. “This decreases most forms of chronic pain, often by over 70 percent, and can be very helpful protecting the brain against dementia.”

ProHealth offers the world’s largest portfolio of NAD+ boosting products alongside a curated selection of nutrients such as omega-3s, taurine, pterostilbene and alpha-ketoglutarate.

“Our lineup also includes multi-ingredient formulations tailored to specific needs, such as a multi-senolytic blend and the upcoming Akkermansia symbiotic,” Dr. Bitz said. “Recently, we expanded our offerings to include peptides, compounded pharmaceuticals and at-home test kits, providing a more comprehensive suite of tools for healthy aging.”

1MD offers premium, clinically formulated supplements to address key aspects of aging such as joint health, cardiovascular health, digestion, immunity, brain health, eye health and lung health.

Protocol for Life carries several products for healthy aging, mainly free radical scavengers such as Alpha-Lipoic Acid, Astaxanthin, EGCg, Glutathiones, Grape Seed OPC, PQQ, CoQ10 and Resveratrol.* The company also carries amino acids, protein powders and condition specific products, according to Torres-Moon.

Kyowa offers Setria, the world’s top-selling branded glutathione ingredient. It has been shown to be effective for increasing glutathione levels in the blood. It is backed by clinical studies and is used by more than 100 brands for dietary supplements, Stanieich explained.

“Commonly known as ‘The Master Antioxidant,’ glutathione is notable for its powerful antioxidant and detoxification effects and its capability to boost the effectiveness of other antioxidants,” Stanieich said. “For example, vitamins C and E, after neutralizing free radicals, can be reactivated by glutathione to continue working. Therefore, maintaining glutathione levels is important for achieving optimal health.”

Lightbody’s Total Eye Health + Blue Light Filter is a science-backed supplement designed to support eye health, hydration and protection from daily light exposure including blue light. According to Ribiero and Zofrea, the proprietary blend includes lutein and zeaxanthin derived from marigold flowers, MaquiBright Chilean maqui berry extract, lycopene from tomato extract and rosemary extract.

“With modern lifestyles involving prolonged screen time, Total Eye Health + Blue Light Filter provides essential nutrients to maintain healthy ocular structure, combat blue light exposure and promote eye hydration, making it a key supplement for healthy aging and longevity,” they said.

Standard Process offers numerous products for healthy aging such as Regeneplex, HerbaVital, B Vitality with CoQ10 and Turmeric Forte.

According to Dr. Smith, age 65 is often tagged as the target age for vulnerability to viruses, illustrating the need for a healthy immune system. Chronic low-grade inflammation, often caused by an imbalance of the immune response, can be a major contributor to many conditions. Gnosis’ LifeinU BSCU1 has been shown to reduce low-grade inflammation in the elderly.

“Low-grade inflammation associated with aging, often called ‘inflammaging’ is believed to contribute to many chronic diseases affecting elderly individuals,” Dr. Smith said. “The gut microbiota is heavily involved in the development of inflammation through the release of inflammatory mediators. Probiotics are known to help restore a healthy balance of the gut microbiota, as well as to improve barrier function.”

Elitone plays a significant role in promoting healthy aging by addressing the common, but under-discussed challenge of urinary incontinence. Incontinence cause bladder leakage, but also caused secondary effects such as reduced exercise, more isolation, UTIs (urinary tract infections), skin irritation and depression, according to Kolb.

“This FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)-cleared, non-invasive wearable device helps women regain control and confidence, empowering them to lead active lives without worry,” Kolb said. “By treating the issue discreetly at home, Elitone aligns perfectly with the growing consumer demand for effective, easy-to-use solutions that fit into everyday routines. Healthy aging is about removing barriers to staying active, and Elitone provides a practical solution to help women age with confidence and vitality.”

Longevity by Nature has a wide array of products for healthy aging including Telos95. According to Alkayali, telomeres are protective caps on the ends of chromosome that safeguard DNA that provides essential instructions for cell function and division.

“Over time, telomeres naturally shorten as cells divide, leading to cellular malfunction and eventual cell death (senescence). Aging, unhealthy lifestyle choices and environmental stressors accelerate telomere shortening,” Alkayali said. “Telomerase, an enzyme that maintains telomere length, declines with age, further contributing to this process. Cellular age, measured by comparing telomere length (TeloYears), can indicate how well a person is aging compared to their actual age.”

Final Thoughts

“Both chronic pain and dementia are skyrocketing in the elderly. Chronic pain then triggers dementia as well. This can all be addressed naturally. But standard physicians do so very poorly. These are key reasons people seek out holistic practitioners,” Dr. Teitelbaum said.

Dr. Zubkov added, “Healthy aging is not about adding years to life, but adding life to years. With the right nutrition, lifestyle habits and targeted supplementation, we can maintain energy, cognitive function and mobility well into later years.”

“The word ‘longevity’ comes with the implied promise of extending life, which can feel daunting or unrelatable. For me, however, longevity isn’t just about living longer—it’s about living better. It’s about infusing those years with vitality, helping people rediscover their youthful energy and embracing healthy living as a way of life. That, to me, captures the true essence of longevity,” Dr. Bitz concluded.
