IFM Honors Joel Evans, MD, FMCP-M, as the 2026 Linus and Ava Helen Pauling Award Recipient

IFMThe Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) has named Joel Evans, MD, FMCP-M, as the recipient of the 2026 IFM Linus and Ava Helen Pauling Award in Functional Medicine. This prestigious honor recognizes a clinician or researcher who has significantly contributed to the development of the Functional Medicine Model and expanded its influence within the global health care field.

“Dr. Joel Evans is a true visionary whose wisdom and dedication continue to leave an indelible mark on the field of functional medicine,” stated Gail C. Christopher, DN, IFM Board Chair. “On behalf of the board, IFM is proud to celebrate his extraordinary career and his unwavering commitment to creating a healthier, more harmonious world.”

For more than two decades, Dr. Evans has been a cornerstone in the development of IFM’s core curriculum. His leadership is instrumental in the evolution of the field and in women’s health in particular, from supporting key concepts of Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP) to leading the Hormone Advanced Practice Module (APM). In addition, his stewardship of IFM’s COVID-19 rapid response team underscores his unwavering commitment to clinical excellence during times of global crisis.

“Receiving an award that bears the names of Linus and Ava Helen Pauling is a profound and humbling honor. Throughout my career, I have sought to bridge the gap between rigorous science and the deeply personal, human experience of healing,” said Dr. Evans, a board-certified OB/GYN and Functional Medicine Certified Professional – Medical. “To be recognized by IFM—an organization that has been my professional home for over 20 years—is incredibly moving. This award is not just a personal milestone but a testament to our collective mission of bringing hope, resilience, and transformation to patients and communities worldwide.”

Dr. Evans honors the visionary legacy of Linus and Ava Helen Pauling as he seamlessly integrates clinical excellence with humanitarian grace. A tireless advocate for mind-body medicine, Dr. Evans has brought solace to communities in crisis—from his work with the FDNY after 9/11 to his recent efforts in Ukraine. By combining a clear understanding of the diverse factors impacting human health with his expertise in genomics and oncology, he continues to illuminate the path toward personalized transformation for all.

This marks the second year the award carries its expanded name, honoring both Dr. Linus Pauling and his wife, Ava Helen Pauling, a visionary couple in the advancement of medicine.
